If an asteroid is going to collide with earth, what are scientists planning to do to stop it?

i was watching something on tv a few months ago and that question came up. they said that they would send something(not sure what though) that was large enough to cause a gravitational pull that would alter its course slightly. Remember if you catch the oncoming asteroid early enough, changing its course by just a few degrees could make the difference.
